ResMatched Hank Aaron Rookie Jersey Sells for $2.1M

ResMatches were made to two images of Hank Aaron. The first image was taken at Wrigley Field in August 1954 and shows Aaron donning the number 5 which he only wore during his rookie campaign. The other ResMatched image is from what is believed to be Spring Training in 1955, which shows Aaron wearing the iconic number 44 which you see on the jersey today. The jersey sold for $2,100,000 at Heritage, making it the highest selling Hank Aaron jersey of all time by more than $1,500,000! Click here to see the auction listing with our complete ResMatch Certification.

Over the past couple of weeks, we've also seen a number of other ResMatched items set records including Eric Dickerson's 1984 single-season rushing record game worn jersey (Heritage) and a Patrick Mahomes jersey worn during his first MVP season in 2018 (Goldin).

Response to Cllct article 'Experts differ on photo-match for Babe Ruth 'Called Shot' jersey'

Last week, there was an article written by Darren Rovell in Cllct about the photomatching analyses performed by multiple companies on the Babe Ruth believed “Called Shot” jersey currently at auction. We made the decision to be open about our findings with Rovell for the story.

We were the first photomatching company to research the jersey, in 2019. The owner resubmitted the jersey to us in 2021 and again in 2022. On each examination we came to the conclusion that we could not make the determination of a Resolution Photomatch (a ResMatch). Our definition of a ResMatch has always been the same: we must see characteristics that are definitively identical and definitively unique. In our research, neither of those criteria could be met*. After the last submission to us in 2022, the owner then submitted the jersey to other photomatching companies, who analyzed the same images of Ruth that we did and classified them as photomatches.

We would have loved nothing more than to have been able to call the jersey a ResMatch. We passed up a very significant amount of money and exponentially more value in publicity. We knew that our very high-end client would be upset if we didn’t make a photomatch determination, and that our competitors would then get the opportunity. But we’re always objective first, no matter the magnitude of the item. And in this case, the evidence didn’t allow that determination. While hugely disappointing, we believe strongly that that level of objectivity is essential in our business, and hope that our clients value that as well.

This was far from the first time this type of situation has arisen. A number of times in the past an item has been submitted to us for photomatching, we have been unable to call it a ResMatch by our standards, and the client has then submitted the item to a different company who have called it a photomatch to the same images. We have often felt heavy pressure from some of our most powerful clients to stay silent in these situations. But in this situation, we felt like we had to be open. Selfishly, we wanted to let our clientele see how this differentiates us from competitors, as a concrete example that we stuck to our standards to our own significant detriment, when our competitors called the same images a photomatch. But beyond our own self-interests, we also genuinely felt that being open about our findings was in the best interest of the hobby.

We are already facing significant backlash from one of our biggest clients, in retaliation to sharing our findings. We’re deeply disappointed by this. For our clients who appreciate our standards and objectivity, we’re counting on your support now more than ever. If you believe in Resolution Photomatching, require our services when you’re selling or bidding on items at auction.

Since our founding in 2016, we’ve researched nearly 6,000 game used pieces, and have the most experience in the field. We’re known for having the most thorough research process, spanning three rounds of research across 35+ image databases. And this situation is the most significant example yet of our objectivity and standard, no matter the gain or loss we face from the determination we make.

The Most Thorough Research.

Uncompromising Objectivity.

And now undeniably: The Highest Standard in Photomatching.

*We also did not see the evidence to be able to call it a Likely Photomatch, though to be clear we did not see evidence specifically opposing the possibility of use. Upon prompting we wrote a brief Letter of Opinion detailing the characteristics in player images that showed some level of promise, which was the most we could do for the jersey.

Walter Johnson 1920 Jersey Becomes Oldest ResMatched Jersey

While we have ResMatched a couple older items of different types, we recently made our oldest discovery for a jersey by ResMatching the Walter Johnson jersey pictured above to an image from April 29, 1920!

The image shows Johnson throwing at the Polo Grounds. On the ResMatched date, Johnson faced Babe Ruth as a Yankee for the first time. Johnson pitched a complete game, with 8 strikeouts, two of which came against Ruth. His only run allowed came on Ruth’s first hit as a Yankee at Polo Grounds, an RBI single in the bottom of the 9th inning to deny Johnson the shutout. Johnson also hit a triple in the game to help the Washington Nationals win 2-1, in what was his 299th career win.

Resolution Adds New Image Clarity Amplification Tool to Research Process

We are pleased to announce that we have added a new image clarity amplification tool to our research process.

Nothing is changing from our manual research process; this is only a further addition to our process in our goal to do everything possible to make a ResMatch for our clients.

While to be fully transparent we don't consider this to be a game-changer to our research process, in certain cases it will allow us to make slight improvements to image clarity. Most importantly, after extensive research prior to implementing the tool, we thoroughly confirmed this tool could never add anything or change an image in a way that would lead to a false positive ResMatch determination.

We are always researching and considering new technologies that could help improve our research process to deliver the best service for our clients. Our current findings continue to be that our manual based research process, while highly time intensive, is by far the most accurate and highest quality process possible, which is always our top priority. This new technology will be an additional incremental improvement.

Babe Ruth 1923 Bat Becomes First Ever ResMatched Ruth Bat

We recently made one of our most significant discoveries by ResMatching the Babe Ruth bat pictured above to an image from October 3, 1923! The image shows Ruth in a New York Giants uniform posing with Jack Dunn and Jack Bentley before a charity benefit game versus the Baltimore Orioles. The date of the game was an off day for the Yankees which allowed Ruth to participate. During the game, Ruth hit a home run in the 5th inning and the Giants won 9-3.

Announcing Our New ResMatchResults Presentation!

We are proud to announce a new look for our ResMatch results! Our new presentation pieces, which will be included as part of our service at no additional charge, will represent an unparalleled final product for all ResMatched items. Our new look has been extensively researched and planned since the start of the year, and we're very excited about the added element it will bring for our clients!

Museum Quality Display For Museum Quality Pieces

Our new look presentation will feature 3 display options for our clients. Every ResMatch will come with a custom-plated plaque with the ResMatch title, that can be mounted with the piece. The plaques are 7 inches in length and feature a high quality black polished finish with a back mount for wall display.

Our clients will also have the option of receiving our ResMatch Super Zoom graphic in a 12-inch black finished wood frame. The framed graphic is perfect for showing off the ResMatch through imagery, and can be wall mounted aside the plaque or displayed on a desk with the foldout easel.

ResMatches will also come with a newly renovated ResMatch Certification. The new letters will be encased in a hard plastic shell, with an extra thick design for enhanced feel. Also included at the option of the client will be a wall mounted display stand, which will allow friends and visitors easy access to read about the certification of the item. Any or all of these three parts of the new ResMatch presentation will be options for our clients, allowing each client to customize the best presentation to fit their specific collection.

A Deeper Dive Into The ResMatch Analysis

Our new ResMatch Certifications will also give a more in-depth look into the research than our previous letters. The new long form style will give collectors more insight into details found in certain images, the specifics of the characteristics relied upon, details of our Comparison Analysis™ research to ensure the characteristics relied upon are unique, dating research performed, and more. Additional visual elements will also be included in the new ResMatch Certifications as another way to convey information with increased eye appeal.

While the information presented will still be a very brief summary compared to the full depth of scrutiny performed during our research process, it will give collectors a little more insight into what led to the determination of a ResMatch.

Closing Note

What makes Resolution Photomatching different is our research process. We believe that is by far the most important part of our overall service. The thoroughness and expertise that go into that strictly protocoled process are the reasons that time and again top collectors choose Resolution to research their most precious pieces. How the results are presented is completely insignificant in comparison to the research process performed to achieve those results.

That being said, we always want to do every single thing we possibly can to maximize the quality of our service for our clients. So we decided why not both. To go along with our most perfected possible research process, we're now offering our clients what we believe is the best possible presentation as well. And we're including it as part of our service at no additional charge. We hope you enjoy it, and hope that it enhances your already amazing collections.

Announcing ResMatch

We are excited to announce a new title for our flagship classification: ResMatch! ResMatch will denote our same top-level standard in research for game used authentication, but will replace the term “conclusive photomatch” that we have used previously.

When we started Resolution Photomatching in 2016 as the first side-by-side photomatching company, the term conclusive photomatch was new to many. Our launch led to an industry shift, and a photomatch became the most sought-after form of authentication for game used items. In recent years other companies and individuals have tried to replicate our service. Unfortunately, less thorough research processes have led to many items in the industry being called “photomatched” that do not meet or in some cases come close to our criteria for the use of that term.

Our definition has always been simple to define, but unwavering. Characteristics must be present that are definitively identical and definitively unique to the specific piece, confirming with 100% certainty that the item in question is the exact same item visible in the images. ResMatch will now be the term we use to articulate this definition.

Resolution is different because of our research process, which is broken down into 3 rounds. Each round has over 20 strictly protocoled steps that are carried out for every item we research. Our process is painstaking and extremely time intensive, but we believe it is essential in order to ensure that if a match is possible, it will be found through our process. To read more about the details of that process, click The Process tab.

While the word used might seem insignificant, what that word represents is essential to maintaining a trusted standard in the authentication of the industry’s most valuable and significant pieces. If there's a piece that's significant to you, submit it to Resolution and get a ResMatch!

New All-Time Records Set- Top 3 Highest Priced Basketball Jerseys All Resolution Photomatched Pieces

We are pleased to announce that the gold, silver, and bronze of record priced basketball jerseys now all belong to Resolution Photomatched pieces.

A few months ago, a Resolution Photomatched Kobe Bryant jersey set the record becoming the highest priced basketball jersey of all-time. With the conclusive photomatches made to 7 games from Bryant’s rookie season, and to the 1996 NBA Rookie Photo Shoot, the jersey reached a price of $3,600,000 (note the initially reported price of $3,690,000 was later amended by the auction house).

The sale came just two weeks after a new record had been previously set by another Resolution Photomatched jersey, worn by Michael Jordan during his collegiate career at North Carolina. The price realized of that jersey at $1,380,000 more than doubled the previous record for a basketball jersey, which sold for $630,300 in March of 2020. The conclusive photomatch was made to an image of Jordan featured on a cover of The Sporting News, announcing him as the 1983 College Basketball Player of the Year.

In August, a new jersey joined the group. A Magic Johnson jersey conclusively photomatched to both the 1980 and 1984 NBA Finals sold for $1,500,000, surpassing the Jordan jersey to become 2nd on the all-time list.

We are honored to have been able to make the historic photomatch discoveries for these record pieces. And we look forward to seeing what Resolution Photomatched item will break the record next!

Babe Ruth Jersey Conclusively Photomatched To 1932 World Series And 1932 Home Opening Day Home Run

The crown jewel of the game used collecting hobby has now been photomatched. Conclusive Resolution Photomatches were made to this Babe Ruth 1932 jersey, to Games 1 and 2 of the 1932 World Series and to the Yankees' 1932 home opening day when Ruth hit a home run.

The 1932 World Series was the final one Ruth played in, and the Yankees won it in 4 games. The home pinstripe jersey was the only one Ruth ever wore in a World Series with his signature number "3" on the back. Ruth's home run on April 20, 1932 was the 615th of his career, and his 5th and final career home opening day home run at Yankee Stadium.

With the conclusive photomatches now made to this jersey, it stands in our opinion as one of the most valuable and most significant game worn items in the hobby. The jersey is currently on display at the New York Yankees Museum at Yankee Stadium, along with a number of other items that have also been conclusively Resolution Photomatched. It was extremely exciting to be able to confirm these unparalleled photomatches.

Lou Gehrig Photomatched Home Run Jersey Sells For $2,580,000

Jersey Sets Record For Non-Ruth and Becomes 3rd Highest Priced Jersey All-Time

We recently saw with great excitement a Resolution Photomatched item become a part of sports memorabilia history. That item was a 1937 road grey Lou Gehrig jersey, a spectacular piece brought to another level by Resolution Photomatches to 2 home run games. Conclusive photomatches were made to images from 8/11/1937 and 8/29/1937, 2 dates on which Gehrig hit 3-run home runs (see the auction listing with our complete Letter of Photomatch here). The final price realized of $2,580,000 set a record as the highest priced non-Babe Ruth game worn jersey, trailing 2 Ruth jerseys to make it the 3rd highest priced game worn jersey of all-time. It was a great pleasure for us to work on this jersey, and to conclusively confirm the historic photomatches.
